Why I am here.

I was looking for ways of delivering culture on an interesting way, promoting English literature and learning language – what other destination could I have chosen but Oxford!

Bridging the Gap: Between Marlow and Budapest
The first surprise
On my way there, I had my first „Bridging the gap” experience when I crossed the bridge of Marlow, the little sister of our Chainbridge in Budapest. As I learned, István Széchenyi was delighted by the new technique of the suspension bridge and suggested to appoint William Tierney Clark with planning the new bridge above the Danube. The guarding lions are Budapest specials only.

Some of the sights of Oxford Advantages of Home-stay
Before my trip I had mixed feedback from my collegues about their home-stay experiences. It has been a wonderful experience for me. My hosts could not have been more helpful and pleasant. At dinner time they were looking forward to listen to my daily adventures, practicing and explaining new vocabulary, telling me interesting stories about the city and having lots of questions and long conversations on Hungary. On the weekend they drove me to the countryside, cooked delicious meals and taught me how to bake scones. They were fantastic! The Lake School of English in Oxford
From several similar courses I chose their’s because the school seemed to have a good reputation and reliable, good references. Although they are not located in the center of Oxford and their building does not look any special from outside, it was not a dissappointment at all. The program was wonderfully rich and organized, the teachers were well prepared and enhusiastic and we’ve got all the help we needed to get around. There were several courses offered during the week in four topics, so all together we were 42 of us, divided into smaller study groups according to our chosen topics. |
The course
During the course it was demonstrated to us how can we combine language teaching and cultural immersion effectively. Our teachers delivered the content by using a variety of quizzes, word and flashcards, directed pair and group work and on-line materials. We learned about colloquial expressions, phrasal verbs and idioms, collocation and word partnerships as well as everyday expressions and their origins. These and the discussions on traditions, typical British pastimes, the education system and lots of other topics concluded this full of learning week. Our group was the smallest, with seven teachers from Finland, Norway, Romania, Germany and Hungary. We had lively conversations, lots of interesting discussions and fun.

Programs after school
Most of the days our group stayed together after school. I believe that we used our time well and did our homework conscientiously. As homework assignments we participated on two guided tours, visited the Ashmolian, Pitt Rivers, Natural Science and Story Museums, the Bates Collection of musical instruments, went to High tea, saw an excellent performance from the Oxford Theatre Company and visited Blenheim Palace.
It was an unforgettable week, a wonderful cultural experience – I am very grateful for everybody who had a part in making it possible. While preparing my presentation for our Erasmus+ group and the public library dissemination afternoon, I relived the events and was able to tell new bits and pieces to my family. I will need the summer to finish organizing my pictures and fully integrate the changes into my library program.
Thanks to you all!
